Disko — Cappelen Damm
—Animated Pixel Illustrations

Illustration, Animation, Character Design

Working with Cappelen Damm, a Norwegian publishing company, my partner Cody and I won the job of creating a series of animated pixel illustrations for their new online learning platform, DISKO.

DISKO is a tool for high schools to be used as part of the curriculum. The purpose is to deliver topics to students in a way that was relevant to them. Our job was to illustrate the math unit in particular.

Out with “Tommy has 57 watermelons…” and in with something more engaging to today's youth.

The inspiration came from point-and-click games from the 90s and retro pixel art aesthetics.

Final illustrations

— but don’t worry, there’s more to come

This sketchy scientist teaches students about functions using a home made function-machine.

In this case we follow the mayor of Kobberfjord, a pretend Norwegian town, taking steps to stimulate population growth.

This illustrates a case about a young journalist reporting on the upcoming election – using percentage calculations to stay on top of the parties popularity.

This case teaches the students about powers, calculating the rising increase in followers of a video game streamer.

This case is about blood alcohol level calculation. Here the students will be checking the blood alcohol level of some e-scooter drivers who are suspected of driving under the influence.

This was a case about a phone insurance company calculating how much their plans should cost to be profitable, without making them more expensive than paying to fix your phone without them.

This case is about navigating different sales deals to keep on top of what is actually a good deal for one's needs.
